Obituary

Alice Bernice (Braaten) Lehtola, daughter of Knut Theodor and Rachel (Iverson) Braaten, was born April 5, 1915 in Hamlin County near Bryant, South Dakota. She grew up and received her education in rural school and worked for friends and neighbors before her marriage to Abner Walter Lehtola on November 1, 1933 in Watertown, South Dakota. They moved to Bryant in 1937 and in 1941 moved to Seattle, Washington where he worked as a carpenter. In 1945 they returned to Hamlin County when his father retired and they continued the family farm until their retirement in 1972. They continued to live on the farm until Abner's death on Sepember 26, 1988. She remained on the farm and spent winters with Gary in Alburnett, Iowa. She entered Jenkins Living Center on March 17, 2011 and died there on Friday, June 1, 2012 at the age of 97 years. She was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church and she and Abner enjoyed traveling following their retirement. Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Walter and his wife Charlotte of Frankfort, SD, Gary of Alburnett, IA; two grandchildren, Ann (Lehtola) Finn and Philip Lehtola; one great grandchild, Robyn Finn; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Abner; her parents; two brothers, Ted and George; and two sisters, Ruth and Laura. Her funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church near Lake Norden. Visitation will be from 5PM to 7PM Sunday at the church.
