Alice (Hedblad) Mackey, daughter of Olaf and Mathilda (Olson) Hedblad, was born February 4, 1910 in Braddock, North Dakota. Following her mothers death when Alice was very young, she was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Olson near Lake Norden. She graduated from Lake Norden High School and was united in marriage to Arne Mackey on September 1, 1933 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. They farmed near Lake Poinsett until Arnes death on November 22, 1992. Alice continued to live on the farm until entering the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in July of 2003. She died there on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the age of 94 years, 2 months and 10 days. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden. Alice enjoyed embroidery, crocheting rugs, knitting slippers for friends and quilting. Her springs and summers were spent working in her garden and taking care of the lawn. Many hours were also spent watching the birds at her feeders and caring for her cat, Pinky. Grateful for having shared her life are one son, John Mackey and his wife Neva of Estelline; two granddaughters, Teresa Moore and her husband Darryl of Arlington and Nancy Geerdes and her husband Mark of Swea City, IA; five great grandchildren, Eric, Brittney, John, Dallas and Cody; three step great grandchildren, Ashley, Austin and Tomi; four sisters, Marjorie Christensen of Hazelton, ND, Ethel Koistinen of Lake Norden, Martha Hussong and her husband Wayne of Rockford, IL, Maxine Phillips of Crescent City, CA; two brothers, Andrew Hedblad of Napoleon, ND and Raymond Hedblad and his wife Sylva of Maniago, Italy; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Roger in infancy; her parents; three sisters, Julia, Helen and Ruth; and two brothers, Oscar and John.
