Alvin A. Anderson, 72, of Estelline passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, January 5, 2019 at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at the church will a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30 pm. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Alvin A. Anderson was born on April 4, 1946, in Brookings, South Dakota the son of Leonard and Genevieve (Blanchette) Anderson.
Al received his education in the Brookings Schools. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 until 1967. He was united in marriage to Carleen Hutt on May 2, 1969, in Brookings, SD. After their marriage he worked road construction for several years until 1972, when they moved to Clark, SD. While in Clark, Al served on the police force until moving to Lemmon, SD in 1973, and serving on the police force there until 1980. In 1980, they moved to Estelline, SD, where he served as Chief of Police until his retirement in 1999. Al and Carleen moved to Lake Poinsett until he began struggling with health concerns, and the couple returned to Estelline.
He was a member of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Estelline. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #184 in Estelline and also a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, spending the day on the lake with his pontoon, driving around in his John Deere Gator to visit friends and camping, because Carleen enjoyed it.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Carleen Anderson, of Estelline, SD; son, David (Emerald) Anderson, of Brookings, SD; daughter, Angela (Lyle) Vohlken, of Estelline, SD; one sister, Sheila (Ron) Dykstra, of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Chelsea, Matthew, Braxton and Braydon Anderson and Brian, Brett, Tiffany and Tasha Vohlken and one great grandson, Harrison Vohlken. He is also survived by three brothers-in-law, Dennis Hutt, Leroy Hutt and Jim Meyer and one sister-in-law, Vickie Molengraaf.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, David Kruse and Joe Molengraaf and sister-in-law, Donna Meyer.
