Obituary

Anthony James Stavick, son of Marilyn Stavick Linneman and Lloyd Stavick, passed away at the age of 62 after a lengthy battle with cancer on September 8th, 2024 at Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan, New York. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, SD.

He grew up in Castlewood, SD. As a Senior, he attended Watertown Senior High School where he graduated in 1980, then moved to Moorhead, Minnesota to attend college at Moorhead State University.

As a sophomore, his first job was Janitor's Assistant, helping clean the Castlewood High School. An accident resulted in Tony wearing a cast to heal a broken arm. It didn't hinder his ability to get the job done. He hired his sister, Lana, and her friend, to take over his cleaning duties, managing their schedules and overseeing their work. He paid them out of his own checking account. Loyal to keep his word carried with him his entire life.

He was an avid fan of Diana Ross. At 16, he drove himself to Minneapolis to her concert to see her in person.

He thrived selling books at B. Dalton Book Store in Watertown and at West Acres Mall in Fargo, North Dakota while attending college. Broadway called his name and he answered, driving to Manhattan with three friends in 1987. He worked for The Actors Heritage Guild, Broadway Theatres, and most recently for The Theatre Refreshment Company at the Majestic and Jacobs Theatres where he managed the refreshment staff.

His interest in piano started when he was five, playing for church, and as a member of Prelude, his band; was an accompanist to singers; he played trombone, baritone, and flugal horn. He was selected for All State Band, Chorus and Boys State. He conducted orchestras for shows and plays; directed skits in College, he wrote plays, assigning his audience to act in them; produced videos, movies, and learned how to develop film and made his closet into a dark room.

Tony held funerals for birds, hamsters, gerbils, and goldfish as a young child. He rescued two cats that were living on the streets in New York and provided them with a loving home. He mentored numerous hopeful actors, including Devin Harjes.

Unselfishly, he spent all of his annual vacation time in South Dakota with his family.

He held memberships in the Lutheran Church in Astoria, SD, where he was baptized; Lutheran Church in Sturgis, SD, and confirmed in The American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, SD.

Survived by his Mother, Marilyn, her husband Dick Linneman, Sister, Lana (Bob) Smunk, Clear Lake, SD, his Uncles Chuck Spurgin of Madison, SD, and Richard Spurgin of Lake City, SD, and many cousins.

Preceded by his Father, Lloyd C. Stavick; grand parents, Clarence and Francis Stavick; Jim and Myrtle Spurgin, Aunt Shirley ( Clayton) Borah; Uncle Donnie Spurgin and Cousin Butch Borah.
