Obituary

Arthur H. 'Art' Harms, 87, of Sanborn, IA, formerly of Estelline, SD, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018, at Prairie View Healthcare Campus, in Sanborn. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Monday, October 1, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday at Geise Funeral Home, in Estelline.

Arthur H. Harms was born on September 8, 1931, in Plymouth County, IA, the son of Jurgen and Katherine (Beitelspacher) Harms. His family farmed in the rural Ireton, IA area. He attended country school near Ireton through the 8th grade. He later completed his GED while in the Army. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served during the Korean conflict until his Honorable Discharge in 1955. He was united in marriage to Darlene Selchert on June 28, 1953, at Germantown Lutheran Church in South Shore, SD. The couple began farming near Hawarden, IA until 1964.Their first child, Russell, was born in 1955. Their daughter Sheryl came in 1958 and son Dean in 1959. The family moved to Estelline, SD, where Art continued to farm. Their daughter Carla was born in 1965. Art retired from farming in 1998, but continued to work various jobs in his retirement.

Art enjoyed going to gun shows and fishing. He was an avid reader and could strike up a conversation with anyone he ran across. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, and served as the weed commissioner for the Hidewood Township. In retirement, he and Darlene enjoyed traveling on bus trips. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Art is survived by his wife of 65 years, Darlene Harms, of Sanborn, IA; three children, Russell (Diane) Harms, of Hartley, IA, Sheryl (John) Hase, of Alta, IA and Carla (Marlo) Reihe, of Akron, IA; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence (Pat) Harms, of Seattle, WA and Ernest (Iona) Harms, of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Marion Jarrett, of Rochelle, IL and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, son Dean Bruce Harms and brother Alvin Harms.
