Bernard LeRoy Niemann, age 87, of Goodwin, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, December 18, 2019. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Hamlin Reformed Church on Sunday, December 22, from 4 pm to 6 pm. The funeral, with military honors, will also be held at Hamlin Reformed Church on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 2pm.
Geise Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Memorial may be directed to Hamlin Reformed Church.
Bernard was born March 29, 1932. He was born at home in Deuel County, South Dakota. He was the first of 7 children born to John and Alice (Goens) Niemann. He was raised in the Clear Lake area, attending a small country school. He worked with his father and other local farmers until he joined the United States Army during the Korean War. He served in Korea for 16 months with the A Battery of the 625 th Field Artillery Battalion. He was an active member from September 10, 1952 until August 17, 1954.
He was united in marriage to Ardith Gaede on September 11, 1955, in Clear Lake, South Dakota. The couple raised four sons while living in Clear Lake area until 1973 when they bought their farm near Goodwin. Bernard and Ardith celebrated 62 years of marriage before she passed on Wednesday, October 11, 2017.
He was raised in the Hamlin Reformed Church and chose to become a member early in his adult years. His hobbies and interests included working on his farm (especially with his sons), bowling (in his younger years), playing cards, visiting with friends, and spending time with his family.
Bernard is survived by his children; David (Joan) Niemann, Ron (Dana) Niemann, Kevin (Stacy) Niemann, and Brad (Tammie) Niemann. He was blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His ninth great grandchild is expected in March.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ardith, his parents, John and Alice Niemann; his sister, Lavona Krause; his brother, Lester Niemann, his sisters-in-law, Joanne Niemann, Cleo Olerud and Marvel Dumpke; his brothers-in-law, Bud Schiefelbein, Orville Krause, Herb Dahlgren and Jerry Dumpke.
The family would like to thank everyone for the many thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
