5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood.
Billie Dale Smunk and his twin brother, were born January 21, 1939 at Goodwin, South Dakota to William and Grace (Jenkins) Smunk, joining seven brothers and sisters. In 1960 he married Diane Gollnick in Minneapolis, Minnesota and he worked in Minneapolis for Metal-Matic for five years before returning to South Dakota. Billie was employed at Watertown Monument Works for 34 years and the past three years has worked part-time for Lynn Hoitsma and Hamlin County Conservation. He died on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 17 days.
He was a volunteer fireman in Castlewood for 20 years and served on the board of Lake Region Golf Course for nine years. Billie played softball for many years and also enjoyed playing golf. He loved spending time in his yard either working or just relaxing. Billie had many friends and acquaintances and was well known for his humor and his wit. He loved to visit with family and friends and especially looked forward to family and community get togethers.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Diane of Castlewood; five daughters, Carney Crocker and her husband Mike, Kim Boswell and her husband Stan, Carol Engels and her husband Scott, Kerri Ruesink and her husband Doug, all of Castlewood, Billie Jo Johnson and her husband Doug of Jordan, MN; one son Travis Smunk of Watertown; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Darlene Janssen and her husband Bill of Castlewood; his twin brother, Bobbie Smunk and his wife Anna of Kranzburg, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
