Carl Monroe Miller, Jr. son of Carl and Mary (Bowman) Miller, was born November 26, 1919, on the family farm near Carpenter, South Dakota. He attended school near Carpenter and then moved with his family to Castlewood in 1933, where he attended Castlewood High School. He was united in marriage to Leola Arlene Meyer of Castlewood on April 5, 1942, at Wichita, Kansas. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard on June 9, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. As a motor machinist mate on LST 19, he took part in the invasions of Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu and Angar, earning two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged on September 22, 1945. Following his military service, the couple moved to the Seattle, Washington, area where he worked in the shipyards at a navy base. They moved back to South Dakota in 1947, where Carl joined his father in farming. In the late 1950?s, he began working in sales for agriculture related businesses, including a long career with PAMCO, Inc. Carl died on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of of 88 years.
He was a life long member of the American Legion and the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood. He enjoyed his family, fishing, traveling, golf and wintering in Florida.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 66 years, Leola of Lake Poinsett; three sons, Steve Miller and his wife Donna of Rapid City, SD, Greg Miller of Sioux Falls, Jeff Miller and his wife Sheri of Brookings; five grandchildren, Josh Miller of Delafield, WI, Sarah Wicks and her husband Adam of Clear Lake, Jake Miller of Sonoma, CA, Emily Miller of Minneapolis, MN, Blayne Wiig of Brookings; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Byron, Earl and Phillip; and one sister, Pearl.
