Carol Jean (Kangas) Fritz, daughter of George and Elma (Huovinen) Kangas, was born August 24, 1936 at Rolla, North Dakota. She spent her early childhood in North Dakota and when she was 13 years old her family moved to the Dempster, South Dakota area. She graduated from Estelline High School and later graduated from Nettleton Business College. She returned to Rolla, North Dakota and was employed at the ASCS Office for two years before moving to Brookings, South Dakota and continuing her employment with ASCS. Carol was united in marriage to Fred Fritz on October 27, 1962 in Estelline and they farmed in the Castlewood area for many years. Fred died on February 27, 1991 and Carol continued to make the farm her home. She died on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 20 days. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood and enjoyed spending time with her family and especially taking her grandchildren on special shopping trips. Grateful for having shared her life are three daughters, Gayle Dirksen and her husband Steve of Sioux Falls, SD, Patricia Foster and her husband Kevin of Estelline, Lori Daugaard and her husband Dean of Columbia, SC; nine grandchildren; one sister, Kaye Latt and her husband Darwin of Castlewood; one brother, Alfred Kangas and his wife Roxanne of Watertown, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. Carol was preceded in death by her husband Fred and her parents.
