CATHRYN M. ROTH MEMORIAL SERVICE 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 27, 2004 United Church Of Christ Estelline, South Dakota Rev. Joyce Anderson, Officiating Interment Hillcrest Cemetery Estelline, South Dakota Cathryn Marie Roth, age 93, slipped away from life on earth on March 9, 2004. She resided in Richmond, Virginia, having moved there following the passing of her loving husband, Leslie in Phoenix, AZ in November of 1990. The move to Virginia placed her nearer family where Kim Roth excelled as family health advocate for her grandmother. Death came peacefully ending her thirteen years of enjoyable life as a Virginian. After ten years in residence at Gayton Terrace, she moved to Our Lady of Hope Health Care Center for more specialized care. Cathryn was affectionately known as Smiley by the nursing staff, never complaining while maintaining her classic sweet, considerate and appreciative disposition to the end. A South Dakotan most of her life, Cathryn was born oldest of five children on July 12, 1910, in Milbank, South Dakota to Frank and Caroline Lowthian. Her family later moved to Watertown where she finished her schooling and married Leslie on August 18, 1929. Two sons, Bill and Jim, were born on September 22, 1930 and 1932 respectively. After living briefly in Sioux Falls and Britton, the Roth family moved to Estelline in 1934 were they thrived until retirement and departure to Arizona in 1984. Roths Recreation Parlor, State Theatre, Coffee Shoppe and Insurance Agency kept the family busy on Main Street. Cathryn was the gate keeper at the theatre, selling tickets, supervising ushers and concession operators while hosting theatre patrons. He smile and warm demeanor created a friendly atmosphere. She was the pianist/organist in the Estelline Congregational Church for over forty years. Her mission in music was playing for church services, choir practices, programs, concerts, weddings and funerals. She organized and directed a youth choir for many years. Cathryn was known for perfection in and love of music. Sad was the day she no longer played her Hammond organ due to an arthritic condition affecting her hands. The absence of music in her life was a major disappointment, one she managed with class. Cathryn served as representative on the South Dakota Congregational Church Board. She was honored as Estellines Centennial Queen, leading the historical street parade in a horse drawn carriage, in 1982. The spooked horse bolted, was caught and calmed with her onboard the carriage. Community activities included her church work, Study Club, Ladies Aid, Eastern Star, Plymouth Guild and giving organ instruction to youngsters. Cathryn enjoyed homemaking, motherhood and entertaining. She was an especially loving and caring Mom. She took the lead in forming an Estelline Summer Camp for grandchildren, Kim, Robin and James II, in an effort to help Jim during his single parenting years, 1967 to 1971. Cathryns many contributions made Estelline a better place for everyone. She built lasting friendships throughout her life, everywhere she lived. Preceding her in death was her husband, Leslie Warren Roth, and by her son, Major William Leslie Roth, USAF (Ret), in 1966. She is survived by one son, CDR James Frank Roth, USN (Ret), and his wife Bente of Poquott, NY; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Hamilton of Canton, SD. Memorials may be directed to the Roth Memorial Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Fund, %Estelline High School Alumni Association, PO Box 108, Estelline, SD 57234. The scholarship established in 1999 honors Les and Bill Roth and the memory of Cathryn now joins the memorial.
