Clair Irwin Nitteberg was born June 10, 1917 at Stone Bridge Resort on Lake Poinsett the son of Charles and Ida (Tofley) Nitteberg. He received his education in rural school in Hamlin County and then attended Estelline High School. He lived and was employed at the family resort. He also owned and operated a coin machine route with his brother John for 35 years. Clair was united in marriage to the love of his life Merlyne Anderson on December 19, 1942 at St. Martins Lutheran Church in Watertown, South Dakota, a double wedding with James Jager and Geraldine Schmeling. After their marriage they owned and operated Stone Bridge Resort and the Lake Poinsett Casino until retiring in 1979. He died on Monday, January 14, 2013 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center at the age of 95 years. Clair was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. He was also a member of the Lake Poinsett Area Development Association, the National Rifle Association, and an honorary member of the Hamlin County Sportsman Club and served as a director of that organization. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Merlyne of Castlewood; one son Gale and his wife Sandy of Castlewood; one daughter Connie Stehly of Castlewood; two granddaughters, Gayla Greene of Watertown and Tori Jo Yonker of Castlewood; three step-grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother John, and two sisters, Erma and Olive. His funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 18, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Visitation will be from 4PM to 7PM Thursday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline. Burial will be in the East Norden Cemetery.
