John Sandstrom, Officiating Interment Castlewood Cemetery Visitation 6 PM to 8 PM Thursday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood. Clarice L. (Propst) Rhody, daughter of John and Clara (Schnarr) Propst, was born December 3, 1925 at Brandt, South Dakota. She received her education in rural schools near Brandt and Estelline and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1943. She continued her education at General Beadle State College and received her teaching certificate. Clarice taught rural school in Deuel County for two years before her marriage to Virgil Rhody on March 4, 1945 in Toronto, South Dakota. Virgil was in the Navy and they lived in Norfolk, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida until his discharge in October of 1945. After returning they farmed near Bemis, South Dakota for 12 years. From 1958 until 1963, they owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store in Castlewood. In 1963 they returned to the farm near Castlewood. Virgil died on September 20, 1993 and she continued to live on the farm with Virlin. In 2001 she and Virlin moved into Castlewood. She moved to Watertown in 2005. She died on Monday, September 4, 2006 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 1 day. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood and the ladies aid where she served as treasurer for some time. She also belonged to church circle and bible study. She enjoyed reading, working on puzzles and especially visiting with family and friends. Clarice enjoyed her children and grandchildren and enjoyed living on the farm and doing the books and being the go-fer for parts and supplies. Grateful for having shared her life are three sons, Calvin Rhody and his wife Donna of Lake Norden, SD, Clarence Rhody and his wife Melissa of Castlewood, Dana Rhody and his wife Jenny of Watertown; four daughters, Lorene Tvedt and her husband Richard and Brenda Woertink and her husband Todd, all of Castlewood, Kim Tesch and her husband Ronald and Valerie Simon and her husband Mark, all of Watertown; a daughter-in-law, Deanna Rhody of Brookings; 27 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; one sister, Dolores Magadanz and her husband Orville of Watertown, SD; one brother, Johnnie Propst and his wife Phyllis of Mitchell, SD; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ethel Propstof Goodwin, Quentin and Marie Rhody of Clear Lake, Mervin and Joyce Rhody of Albert Lea, MN, Barbara Rhody, Verna Junker and Carol Laabs all of Brookings, Ida Mae Devine of Albuquerque, NM, Evelyn Gorski of El Monte, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends. Clarice was preceded in death by her husband Virgil; two sons, Randy and Virlin; one daughter Trudy; her parents; and three brothers, Ralph, Clifford and Harlan.
