Obituary

Darlene Sonnenburg Brookings, South Dakota Funeral Service 1:30 P.M., Monday, February 13, 2006 Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Estelline, South Dakota Rev. Michael Enderle, Officiating Interment Hillcrest Cemetery Estelline, South Dakota Visitation 2PM to 5PM Sunday at Rudes Funeral Home in Brookings and from noon to service time on Monday at Mt. Calvary in Estelline. Darlene Gloria (Sommervold) Sonnenburg, daughter of Oliver and Bessie (Christiansen) Sommervold, was born February 3, 1923 at Hendricks, Minnesota. She spent her early years and received her education in rural school in Deuel County, South Dakota and attended Toronto High School. After receiving her education she was employed part-time at the telephone office in Toronto. Darlene was united in marriage to Carroll G. Sonnenburg on November 22, 1940 in Clear Lake, South Dakota. After their marriage they farmed in Deuel County for many years until moving into Estelline in 1972. Darlene worked at the Estelline Caf and the Estelline Nursing Home and Hospital as a cook. Carroll died on April 11, 1990 in Sioux Falls and Darlene continued to live in Estelline until moving to Brookings in June of 1993. She died on Friday, February 10, 2006 at the Brookings Hospital at the age of 83 years and 7 days. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Estelline and was also active in Ladies Aid. She especially enjoyed making crafts, embroidering dish towels and making pillowcase dolls. She loved flowers and gardening and enjoyed spending time with her family, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grateful for having shared her life are five sons, Duane and his wife Karen of Bloomington, MN, LeRoy and his wife Judy of Estelline, Curtis and his wife Louise of Woodbury, MN, Ricky and his wife Nancy and Steve and his wife Roxy, all of Brookings; 13 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband Carroll; her parents; three brothers, Orwin and El Roy and Donald; and one sister, Gilma.
