Funeral Service 11:00 AM, Monday, April 18, 2011 Evangelical Covenant Church Lake Norden, South Dakota Rev. Joe Turrill, Officiating Visitation 3PM to 5PM Sunday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden. N. Dean Hawley, son of Herbert Chester and Mabel Viola (Pollard) Hawley, was born November 15, 1936 at Estelline, South Dakota. He grew up at Estelline and graduated from Estelline High School. He began farming with his brother Dale and then entered the U.S. Army. After his discharge he returned to the family farm and was united in marriage to Darlene Geranen on October 8, 1971 in Lake Norden. They continued to farm near Estelline until 1979 when they moved to Staples, Minnesota where he farmed and worked at True Value Hardware and Killian's Sanitation. He also attended Vo-Tech in Staples from 1987 to 1989. They moved to Lake Norden in 1989 where he worked at the IH dealership in Hayti. Dean also was a custodian at Arlington School from 1991 to 1997. He retired in 1997 due to health reasons. Dean died at the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the age of 74 years. He was a member of the American Legion in Estelline. He enjoyed writing letters, woodworking, building things, visiting, welding, farming, remodeling, carpentry, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved his dogs and animals and was always ready for some good natured fun and teasing of his family and friends. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Darlene of Lake Norden; two daughters, Jeannie Bentley and her husband Scott and Mabel Andrews and her husband James, Jr., all of Lake Preston; one son Herb Hawley of Aberdeen, SD; six grandchildren, Robbie, Stephanie and Matthew Bentley and Sasha, Holly and Andru Andrews; two brothers, Dale Hawley and his wife Florence of Estelline, Glen Hawley and his wife Mary Lou of Litchfield, MN; two sisters, Francis Saathoff of Estelline and Geneva Archer of Brookings; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene and Lyle; his father and mother-in-law, Ernie and Annie Geranen; one sister-in-law, Marie Hawley; six brothers-in-law, Larry, Ronnie, Billy and Roger Geranen, Jim Saathoff and Clyde Archer; one niece Judy and two nephews, David and Ray.
