Donald Bud Walraven Castlewood, South Dakota Funeral Service 10:00 A.M., Thursday, November 4, 2004 American Lutheran Church Castlewood, South Dakota Rev. John Sandstrom, Officiating Interment Castlewood Cemetery Visitation 5PM to 8PM Wednesday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood Donald G. Bud Walraven, son of John G. Walraven, Sr. and Thelma (Shreve) Walraven, was born February 22, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa. When he was five years old his family moved to Watertown, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education there and entered the US Navy in 1952 and served until 1956. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Mason on June 11, 1956 in Madison, Minnesota. In 1956 and 1957 he worked as a painter in Watertown and from 1957 to 1959 owned and operated Buds Caf in Estelline. They moved to southern California in 1959 where he worked for Ingersol-Rand and later worked as a painter. In February of 1965 he rejoined the Navy and served until September 30, 1982, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He was employed at Castle Woodworks from 1982 until 1988 when they purchased the Ships Inn in Castlewood and operated that until the time of his death. He died on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the Deuel County Memorial Hospital in Clear Lake at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 9 days. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, a life member of the VFW in Watertown, a member of the American Legion in Castlewood. He was also a member of the Masons and a retired member of the Castlewood Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Grateful for having shared his life are Evelyn Walraven of Castlewood; one son, Donald and his wife JoAnn of Huron, SD; one daughter, Shelly DeKam and her husband Sherwin of Castlewood; eight grandchildren, Spec. Dana , Danielle, Dustin and Derrick Walraven and Allison, Breanna, Caleb and Darah DeKam; one brother Thomas of New Brighton, MN; one sister Caroleen Boeder and her husband Maynard of St. Cloud, MN; and several nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents, one brother John, Jr. and one sister Dorothy.
