Doris K. (Poppen) McFarland, daughter of John and Esther (Stroschein) Poppen, was born November 14, 1920 on a farm near Estelline. She grew up and attended school in Estelline, graduating from Estelline High School. Doris then attended business college and worked for several years in Watertown. On March 26, 1944 she was united in marriage to Harold McFarland and they farmed west of Watertown for several years. They moved to a farm near Estelline and continued farming until their retirement in 1982. They continued to live on the farm and after Harold's death on May 24, 1984 she stayed on the farm and took care of her parents until their deaths. She moved to Watertown in 2005 and died on January 30, 2015 at Jenkins Living Center at the age of 94 years. Doris was a member of the United Church of Christ in Estelline and soon after her parents died she began her hobby of painting, which was a long time desire of hers. Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Bonita Graham and her husband Dennis of McAllister, OK, Sherry Buetow and her husband Dean of Watertown; one son Gary McFarland and his wife Shirley of Watertown; a daughter-in-law Judy McFarland of Bartonville, IL; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Harold, one son Thomas and her parents. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline. There will be a Prayer Service at 3:00 PM before burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Estelline.
