IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Jean
Simon
August 19, 1940 – May 26, 2024
Doris Jean (Hoff) Simon was born August 19, 1940, in Madison, SD. She was the daughter of Dorothy Ola (Thompson) Hoff and Lloyd Raymond Hoff. She grew up in Orland, SD, attended Orland Consolidated School, and graduated in 1958.
After graduating from High School, Doris worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a Telephone Operator in Madison, SD. Doris married Michael Simon on February 21, 1963, in Madison, SD., where they made their home. They moved to Selby, South Dakota in 1970, where Mike managed a Standard Oil Bulk Distribution Station, and Doris was a homemaker. They moved to Estelline, SD, in 1976, where they owned and operated the Drive-Inn until 1979. Doris worked for several years at the Red Carpet Bar and Lounge as a cook. Her final place of employment was at the Estelline Nursing Home Care Facility as a Certified Nursing Assistant until her retirement in 2010.
Doris was an accomplished seamstress, making everything from the simplest everyday clothes for her children to prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding dresses. She was also an avid quilter who created masterpieces that warmed the bodies of her children and grandchildren. She created a variety of crafts using fabric, including baskets, Christmas ornaments, potholders, and hot pads. There was no challenge with fabric that she would not accept. She enjoyed baking for family and friends. She baked breads, cookies, and various desserts, typically, with every batch being tripled. In addition, she loved to make strawberry rhubarb jam with her grandchildren. This delectable toast topping traveled from South Dakota to Minnesota and also took pride in place on shelves in Virginia. She also occupied her time putting together puzzles and was always in the middle of a good book. Doris also loved babies. Having seven of her own ensured she got extra snuggles with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Doris was very caring, generous, and independent. She enjoyed life in the simplest of ways. She loved conversation with her family and friends, listened well, and offered steadfast advice after raising seven children. She was always a phone call away, guiding her children through life's challenges as well as celebrating the happiest of moments.
She is survived by her sons, Mark (Elizabeth) Simon of Budapest, Hungary, Douglas (Molly) Simon of Bluff Dale, Texas, Eric (Gena) Simon of Maplewood, Minnesota, and daughters, Michelle (Doug) Tvedt of Brookings, South Dakota, Deanna (David) Stelter of Wood Lake, Minnesota, and Jennifer (Blaine) Radtke of Luverne, Minnesota. She is survived by her grandchildren, Alyssa (Andrew) Hora, Sara Tvedt, Emily Simon, Matthew Simon, Isaac Simon, Emelia Simon, Michael Simon, Marlee Simon, Adam (Bobbi), Ashley (Adam) Geraets, Perrin (Stelter) Ardoff, Logan Stelter, Sadie Stelter, Josey (Matthew) Arends, Eli Simon, and Victor Simon. Four great-grandchildren: Hazel, Nora, Owen, and Eloise. Sister Judy (Walt) Rentschler, Howard, SD, brother Donnie (Betty) Hoff, Madison, SD. Sister-in-law Peggy (David) Hoff.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Mike, her son Todd, parents Dorothy and Lloyd Hoff, and brother David Hoff
