Douglas Charles Tormanen, son of Marvin and Marilyn (Thompson) Tormanen, was born October 22, 1956 in Lake Preston, South Dakota. Doug was baptized and confirmed at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. He grew up and attended school in Lake Norden. At a young age he tried his hand at bull riding along with bare back riding with his brothers, Darrell and David "Snowball". He helped on the family farm and worked at Flax & Stock Straw / local farmers. Then he went to work for his Uncle Howard Johnson doing road construction for 10 years. During this time, he met the love of his life, Kathie Kellen. They met on June 16, 1984, and they were married June 30, 1987. He worked at the Lake Norden Elevator for 14 years. He then worked for Nitteberg Construction for a short time. His final job was with H and I Grain where he drove truck for 16 years until his health began to fail.
Doug enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his son Troy and with his nephews Kory and Richard. He especially loved the time of year of his birthday. He claimed it was a holiday since it always seemed to fall on pheasant season opening. Just knowing he would be able to hang with the guys brought joy to his heart. He also had an unbelievable love for his neighbor girls Kimmy and Tiffy Eide, whom called him dad #2. He lovingly called them " Scooter " and " Skeeter". Family was most important to Doug. Every Sunday he would go down to his mom's to have coffee and catch up on stories. He loved listening to old country music, which has rubbed off on his granddaughter Haylee. Doug loved to go watch the Crystal Springs Rodeo. He enjoyed spending so much time with his family and close friends.
Doug is lovingly remembered by his wife Kathie and their son Troy (Brandy) Tormanen of Willow Lake, SD. He is also survived by his mother Marilyn Tormanen of Lake Norden, SD; his siblings, Pam Marchese of Estelline, SD, Randy " Sam" (Sherri) Tormanen of Arlington, SD, Darrell (Kim) Tormanen of Hays, KS, David "Snowball" Tormanen of Estelline, SD, Nancy (Todd) Bjorklund of Estelline, SD, Sue (Fred) Reitsma of Lake Norden, SD, Bonnie Tormanen of Lake Norden, SD, Arlene "Arnie"(Doug) Doescher of Arlington, SD, Tracy (Darin) Laue of Castlewood, SD, Connie (Trav) Bratland of Willow Lake, SD and Amy (Ryan) Miller of Estelline, SD; his grandchildren, Alex and Sydney Kannas, Darrell Bren, Colton Beynon, Mackenzie and Haylee Tormanen; mother-in-law, Phyllis Kellen, of Brookings, SD; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins; his very special girls, Kim and Tiffany Eide; his special godmother Valda Olson; special lifelong friends Larry, Noel and Marlin Koistinen and their sisters Louann and Roberta.
