Obituary

Duane "DJ" Johnson, 69, of Cheyenne, WY went to heaven peacefully on October 29 after a prolonged illness. He was born May 19, 1943, in Estelline SD, to Fred and Alice (Mennenga) Johnson. He received his education in Estelline, graduating in 1961. On Jan. 30, 1971, he married the love his life and best friend, the late Bonnie Lou Sween, and to this union three children were born. They lived various places before settling in Cheyenne. Duane was a kind and gentle husband, father and grandfather. He was a foreman electrician and retired from Western Area Power Administration in 2004. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers L.U. 1759 where he expressed his strong support for unions. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Seabee and retired at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1994. He enjoyed being active in the community and was a member of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Heels, the CFD Security Committee, and also worked on the Tom Horn project. He enjoyed spending time outside and enjoyed rodeos, hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling and taking long walks. Above all, he was proud to be an American. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, a brother, Robert, and his parents; he is survived by his daughter, Kim of O'Fallon, IL; sons, Scott and Shann, both of Cheyenne; one granddaughter, Abigayle; his siblings Gary (Amaine) of Estelline, Sharon of Estelline; and a host of friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation, the Arthritis National Research Foundation, or a charity of your choice. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 2 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Cheyenne. His funeral service will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 5, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Burial will be at the Dempster Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4PM to 7PM Sunday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.
