Earl Colberg, 92, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Lake Norden Avantara in Lake Norden, SD. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline, SD. Visitation will be held the day prior from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline.
Earl C. Colberg was born on September 1, 1931, in Estelline, SD, the son of Ole and Hazel (Millage) Colberg. Earl grew up on the family farm in Deuel County, SD, and attended grade school at Graving and continued his high school education in Estelline, SD. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant Technician in 1956., receiving a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. While in the military he continued his education and received his GED. After serving in the military, he owned and operated his own business in Estelline for 37 years. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier for 17 years. Earl was united in marriage to Shirley Blumke on October 28, 1951, at Hidewood Church.
Earl was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and served on various boards and in several positions including Estelline City Council and as Estelline Mayor for 13 years, Lions Club, Commercial Club, American Legion and on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying his airplane. Earl also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing cards, shaking dice, and especially spending his free time with family and friends.
Earl is survived by his wife, Shirley Colberg; children, Linda (Joel) Mulder of St. Charles, IL, Vicki DeVille of Estelline, SD, Sheila (Doug) Gerhold of Castlewood, SD, Lorri(Steven) Johnson of Humboldt, SD, Marci (Layne) Saathoff of Bruce, SD and David (Naomi) Colberg of Murdo, SD; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; sisters, Jeanette (James) Anderson of Brandt, SD and Phyllis (Neil) Ribstein of Bruce, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Patricia Hess and Kristi Dobbs; siblings, Wallace Colberg, Leslie Colberg and Joyce Schieber; sons- in-law, Randall DeVille and Dave Hess.
Pallbearers for the service will be; Chris Hess, Shawn Hess, Jason Johnson, Brady Johnson, Jon Gerhold, Blake Saathoff, Tyler Thue, Kyle Johnson, Gage Dobbs.
