Edward V. VanDykhorst, son of Evert and Johannah (DeWall) VanDykhorst, was born June 12, 1939 in Estelline, South Dakota. He received his education in Hamlin County and was united in marriage to Judy Mennenga on December 5, 1962 in Dempster, South Dakota. After their marriage they farmed near Dempster until his retirement in 1989. Edward died on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 71 years.

He was a member of the Hamlin Reformed Church. He enjoyed horses, welding, the Minnesota Twins and making woodworking projects for family and friends and baking for his home health caregivers and other coffee guests. Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially giving them horse drawn sleigh or wagon rides.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Judy of Estelline; one daughter Tammy Gilligan and her husband Robert of Estelline; one step-granddaughter Chrissy and her fianc Jason Hai of Volga, SD; three step-great grandsons, Hunter, Shawn and Kobe; a special nephew Larry Saathoff of Estelline; one sister Dolores Jongeling of Estelline; one brother John VanDykhorst and his wife Lillian of Watertown, SD; his mother-in-law Annie Mennenga of Estelline; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ed Saathoff of Estelline, LaVerne and Linda Mennenga, Roger and Marilyn Greenfield, Bill and Bonnie Henrichsen, all of Castlewood, Dale and Tonya Mennenga of Westfield, WI, LouAnn Dahl and her friend Dave Jensen of Brookings; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ed was preceded in death by one son Terry, his parents, one sister Eveyln Saathoff, his father-in-law Lewis Mennenga and his brother-in-law Richard Jongeling.
