Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Lorraine Freeseman left this world on Sunday January 22, 2023 in the care of Hospice at the Watertown Hospital. She was a caring, and loving wife, mother, grandma, sister and friend. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, Monday, at the church, with a Wake service beginning at 6:30 pm. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Betty was born on August 6 , 1943 in Waubay, SD to Roman and Sylvania Lewno.  Betty was raised on a homestead near Grenville, SD.  She was the fourth of fourteen children.

Betty married her husband Jerry Freeseman from Estelline, SD in 1962.   They moved to Chadron, Nebraska where they raised their three children Tracy, Tammy, and John. During their time in Chadron, Betty was Jerry's right-hand man for his Appliance Repair Business. When the two were not working, you would always see them together and many times it was on their favorite fishing hole, or listening to a Red Sox game.

Upon moving to Chadron, Betty first worked for the Chadron State Park.  She then took classes to become a CNA.  She worked at the Chadron Hospital for 30 plus years as a CNA and later as a Ward Clerk.

Betty's husband Jerry passed away in 1997 and Betty moved back to South Dakota.   She then worked for the Estelline and Lake Norden Nursing Homes in the housekeeping department.  Betty finished her career at Benet Place Senior Living in Watertown, SD where she was a cook.  She often spent time visiting the residents and giving her famous massages. She had a deep compassion for the elderly.

Betty was fortunate to have found a very special companion in Larry Hansen of Hayti, SD. They shared life together for eleven years.  Many adventures were had together, from traveling, fishing excursions to massive gardens that they loved to share. During the last four and a half years, he provided Betty with the most wonderful care that was needed after her diagnosis of cancer.  One of their favorite things to do together was go for a drive.  Betty's children will always be deeply grateful for his care and love for their mom.

Betty valued her family and dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She especially loved it when they all gathered together at Christmas.  She loved making goodies, wrapping gifts (with excessive tape!) and giving everyone cozy socks.

Betty loved working with her hands.   She took pride in her large vegetable gardens, canning the produce, and planting her many flower beds.  She especially loved Moss Rose, and Four O' Clocks.  She shared her love of baking which was passed down from her mother.  She loved playing cards with her brothers and sisters and dear friends Denny and Marie.  You would find Betty and Marie playing cards with peanuts and a cold Pepsi in hand.

Betty would always try to make the best of every situation and you would often hear Betty say, "One day at a time," or "Everything in moderation."

Betty is survived by her special companion Larry Hansen, her son Tracy (Kim) Freeseman, her daughter Tammy (Brett) Miller, her son John (Krystal) Freeseman, eight grandchildren, Josh (Mallory) Freeseman, Elizabeth (John) Waring, Laura Carlson, Zachary Miller, Shaniah Freeseman, Jace Freeseman, Bronson Freeseman, Grace Freeseman and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Duane (Cheryl) Lewno, Bill (Carlene) Lewno, Judy (Vernon) Cordell, Dorothy Lewno, Linda (Don) Waggener, Raymond (Audrey) Lewno, Sylvia (Scott) Overmyer, Tim (Mary) Lewno, Tom (Lucy) Lewno and Jeff Lewno and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Freeseman, her granddaughter Samantha Miller, her parents Roman and Sylvania Lewno and three brothers, Gale Lewno, LaVern Lewno, and David Lewno.

Betty was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. She left this earth with Tracy, Tammy John and Larry by her side.

Memorials can be sent to Prairie Lakes Hospice.
