Elsie Kangas Formerly of Lake Norden Elsie Marie Kangas, 86, of Lake Norden, South Dakota died on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton, MN. Born Elsa Maria Seppala on September 9, 1919 in Bryant, South Dakota, the daughter of Mauri and Hilja (Rantala) Seppala. Elsie grew up in Hamlin County and graduated from Hayti High School in 1938. She worked in Salos Grocery and for Millers Caf in Lake Norden before moving to Detroit, Michigan, where she lived for approximately one year. A family advertised that they wanted a farm girl from South Dakota to serve their family. She was united in marriage to Harold Kangas on April 4, 1942. They farmed near Thomas, South Dakota and then bought a farm in Cleveland Township, Hamlin County, Bryant, South Dakota. There they farmed until retiring to Lake Norden in 1978. Following Harolds death on September 17, 1981, Elsie moved to Watertown where she enjoyed caring for children, needlework and spending time with family and friends. She also lived in Dell Rapids near her daughter, Diane and most recently in Carlton, MN near her son, Gary. Elsie was proud of her Finnish heritage and visited relatives in Finland. She also enjoyed numerous trips to Texas. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lake Norden and the Covenant Womens Circle. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; son, Daryl Kangas; one sister and four brothers. She is survived by her three sons, Gary (Janice) Kangas of Esko, MN; Dale (Janne) Kangas of Stewartville, MN; Dewayne (Shari) Kangas of Blaine, MN; two daughters, Jane (Douglas) Youngblood of Burleson, TX and Diane (Willard) Wirkus of Dell Rapids, SD; 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; cousins, Lillian Hand and Raymond Rantala; sisters-in-law, Ruby Seppala, Gladys Reinesch, Ellen Kangas, Juanita Kangas and Margaret Kangas; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be in from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2006 in Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden, SD and continue on Friday, February 24, 2006 from 10 until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service in the Evangelical Covenant Church at Lake Norden. Burial will be in the Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Norden, SD. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Evangelical Covenant Church or the Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery.
