Elsie (Koistinen) Marttila, daughter of Charles and Ida (Tervo) Koistinen, was born November 29, 1919 in Hamlin County, South Dakota. Elsie attended school at Garfield #5 and graduated from Bryant High School in 1938. She worked at Millers Caf in Lake Norden until moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1942 where she was employed at an aircraft factory during World War II. Elsie was united in marriage to Ansgar Johnson on March 20, 1945 in Detroit. They moved to Lake Norden in 1974 and she worked at the grocery store from 1977 to 1980. Ansgar died on November 3, 1980 and she was married to Marvin Marttila on December 8, 1983. Elsie died on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 14 days.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She loved children and taught Sunday School for many years and spent countless hours doing volunteer work and helping at the Lake Norden Museum. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with family and friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Marvin of Lake Norden; one brother Clarence Koistinen and his wife Marie of Lake Norden; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Ansgar; her parents; 10 brothers, Harold, Wesley, Wally, Wilbert, Allen, Elvin, Elmer, Leroy, Clifford and Verner; and one sister, Eldora Juntunen.
