Evelyn Darlene (Mason) Walraven, daughter of Harold and Theresa (Hoff) Mason, was born September 10, 1936 at Bemis, South Dakota. She attended school and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1954. Evelyn was united in marriage to Donald "Bud" Walraven on June 11, 1956 in Madison, Minnesota. She worked at Spies in Watertown before they purchased Bud's Café in Estelline in 1957. They operated that until moving to California in 1959 while Bud was in the U.S. Navy. Evelyn returned to Castlewood in 1974 and managed the Castlewood Municipal Liquor Store and later purchased that and changed the name to the Ship's Inn. She continued to own and operate that until moving to the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in 2006. Evelyn died there on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the age of 78 years. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Castlewood. Evelyn enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and following her grandchildren's sporting events. Grateful for having shared her life are one son Donald Walraven and his wife JoAnn of Huron, SD; one daughter Shelly DeKam and her husband Sherwin of Castlewood; eight grandchildren, Staff Sergeant Dana (Trevor) Grieve, Sergeant Danielle, Dustin (Anna) and Derrick Walraven, Allison, Breanna, Caleb and Darah DeKam; two great grandchildren, Gage Grieve and Leo Walraven; one sister Lillian Kurkela of Estelline; and a host of other relatives and friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by Donald "Bud" Walraven on October 31, 2004 and her parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 12, 2015 at St. John's Catholic Church in Castlewood. Visitation will be from 5PM to 7PM Wednesday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Castlewood.
