Frances B. (Shalley) Miller, daughter of Samuel L. and Eva (Hilburn) Shalley, was born January 23, 1906 in Nevada, Iowa. She grew up in Preston Township in Brookings County where she attended grade school. She and her family attended the Preston Community Church where she was confirmed. She continued her education at the South Dakota School of Business in Watertown, South Dakot. While living in Watertown she attended and joined the Congregational Church of Watertown. She married Melvin Smith in 1932 in Watertown and they lived in California for six years until his death in April of 1945. She was united in marriage to Bernard Miller on September 1, 1949 in Watertown. Frances was employed at many different jobs, which included the Watertown Clinic, the Estelline Clinic, the Estelline Bank and as secretary of the Estelline School District. Bernard died on April 8, 1986 and Frances continued to make Estelline her home. She entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center on July 15, 2002 and died there on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the age of 97 years, 8 months and 7 days. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Estelline. Grateful for having shared her life are one daughter, Marlys Marlow and her husband H.J. "Jim" of Rapid City, SD; three grandchildren, Hal, Mike and his wife Sara, and Deb; three great grandson, Christopher, Steven and Robert; a sister-in-law, Cecelia Shalley of Estelline; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; four brothers, Lawrence, George, Ray and Kenneth; and two sisters, Mabel and Edna.
