Gerret Verhoek, son of Henry and Mattie (Aanen) Verhoek, was born August 1, 1919 at Wheatland, North Dakota. He moved to Castlewood, South Dakota with his parents and later to the Toronto, South Dakota area. Gerret served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. After returning from the military, he helped his father farm. He was united in marriage to Arlene Boender on August 27, 1953 near Hospers, Iowa. They farmed in the Estelline-Bruce area until moving into Estelline in 1989. Gerret entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in 2009 and died there on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the age of 91 years and 12 days.
He was currently a member of Hamlin Reformed Church and was a past member of the Bemis Christian Reformed Church. He was also a member of the Estelline American Legion and enjoyed singing and playing games and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Arlene of Estelline; one son, Gary Verhoek and his wife Kathy of Bruce, SD; two grandsons, Chris and Adam; two brothers, Orie Verhoek and his wife Becky of Estelline and Marion Verhoek of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Cora DeYoung of Moose Lake WA and Dena Bolt of Fruitport, MI; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son Harold in 1962; one sister Jennie; and five brothers, one in infancy, Henry, Niece, Corney and John.
