Gladys E. Haug, 97, of Castlewood, passed away Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Hamlin Reformed Church, in rural Castlewood. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday at Geise Funeral Chapel, in Castlewood.

Gladys Elaine Somsen was born on March 18, 1920, the daughter of Harvey and Elizabeth (Kalleymn) Somsen, in Hamlin County, SD. Gladys' mother passed away early in her life, and her father remarried Flora Somsen, who raised Gladys. She attended rural school in Hamlin County and graduated from Castlewood High School. She attended Central College, a Reformed Christian College, in Pella, IA. She taught school in Hamlin County. She was united in marriage to Floyd Harold Haug on March 15, 1941, at Hamlin Reformed Church. They farmed in Deuel County until their retirement in 1976, when they moved to Castlewood.

Gladys was a lifelong member of the Hamlin Reformed Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, Ladies Aid Society and numerous other roles in the church. Gladys and Floyd's marriage was built on the foundation of God's love. They truly believed in the power and healing of prayer. Gladys always made time to pray for anyone and everyone who was in need of God's grace and mercy. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, boating, and was an excellent cook.  Gladys was very proud of her family and cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Lynn (Lillian) Haug, of Lake Norden, SD; daughter, Wanda (Richard) Payant, of Oldsmar, FL; son, Michael (Jean) Haug, of Castlewood, SD; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna (Robert) Raasch, of Castlewood, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Gladys is preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Somsen; father, Harvey; step mother, Flora Somsen; two brothers, Earl and Harold Somsen; one sister, Violet Somsen; and her beloved husband, Floyd Haug.
