Obituary

Gloria Natalie Johnson, 89, died May 20, 2012, in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 15, 1922, to Carl and Idella (Hover) Rymerson, in Estelline. She graduated from Estelline High School and attended Mankato State College (Minnesota State University) and General Beadle State College (Dakota State University) in Madison, SD. She taught in Butler, Webster, and Bryant. She received her B.A. from Augustana College in 1980. She was united in marriage to Walter K. Johnson on Aug. 18, 1945, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Franklin, MN, and became the mother of Walt's three children, Wanda, Paul, and Harriet. Two children, Cynthia and David, were born to this union. Walt died Mar. 16, 1976. She served as a director at Farmers State Bank in Estelline (now Reliabank) for four years. During this time, in 1968, she and Walt bought the bank. She was presently a member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD, and was a past president of the WELCA. Gloria was raised in a musical family and carried on this tradition throughout her life as a director of junior and senior choirs at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline for 30 years and as a member of Sweet Adelines in Sioux Falls for 15 years. She was also active in the music program while living at Waterford at All Saints in Sioux Falls. Survivors include her children, Wanda Lee of Bella Vista, AR, Paul (Neva) of Algona, IA, Harriet (Don) Scott of Sioux Falls, Cynthia of Lake Poinsett, and David W. (Jan) of Watertown; eleven grandchildren, Mark (Lesa) Lee, Karen Lee, Todd (Kim) Lee, Matthew Johnson (Elizabeth Thimmesh) Johnson, Elisabeth Johnson, Peter (Janelle) Johnson, Anna Johnson (Joerg Albrecht), Mike (Jody) Scott, Amy Scott-Stoltz, Reid (Breanne) Johnson, and Ethan Johnson; and 23 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; her son-in-law M.O. Lee; her parents; her siblings, Earl Rymerson, Vivian Cuniberti, Irene Kurkowski, and an infant brother, Walton. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 25, at 11:00 AM in Trinity Lutheran Church at Estelline, SD. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 24, at Geise Funeral home in Estelline from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at Touchmark at All Saints Chapel in Sioux Falls Wednesday, May 30, at 2:00 PM. Family requests memorials be designated to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hillcrest Cemetery, the Sioux Falls Chapter of Sweet Adelines, or a charity of choice.
