Helen Whittemore, age 100, passed away at Custer Regional Senior Care on Wednesday, March, 14, 2007.

Helen was born January 14, 1907 to John and Mathilda (Heuchert) Decker in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She graduated from Aberdeen High School and went on to further her education at Aberdeen Business School. For a number of years Helen was employed at First National Bank in Aberdeen.

She was united in marriage to Elwin Whittemore in August of 1939 in Madison, South Dakota. After their marriage they moved to Estelline, South Dakota. They resided in Estelline and raised one son, the late David Whittemore. Together they operated the Whittemore Hatchery for several years. Mr. Whittemore died in December of 1964. Helen continued to live in Estelline and worked as the City Librarian for many years. In 1971 she moved to Sioux Falls and lived there until 1997. At that time Helen moved to the Black Hills area to be near her remaining family members.

Survivors include three granddaughters, Janie (Scott) Houk of Hill City, SD, Julie (Paul) Frasier of Belle Fourche, SD, Carol (Bob) Plaisted of Custer, SD; six great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, four sisters and two brothers.
