Henrietta (Hoogwerf) TeKrony, age 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 11, 2023. Henrietta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She valued faith, family, and friends more than material possessions.  Her faith influenced her decisions throughout her life.

Born October 19, 1927, in Volga, SD, Henrietta was the oldest child of John and Margaret (DeGroot) Hoogwerf.  She grew up on four farms with her siblings Fred, Audrey, Nell, and Lois.  At 9, she was harnessing two horses to cut and rake hay with them.  She attended country school and graduated from Volga high school at 16 in 1944. She worked at the Volga hospital for a year.  She received her teaching degree in 1947 and a bachelor degree in 1952 from Calvin College. She taught nine years between Ocheyedan (Iowa) Christian, Oakdale (Michigan) Christian, and Hawarden (Iowa) Christian.

In 1956, she married Henry TeKrony of the Bemis, SD area and moved to the family farm where they lived until 1990.  She preferred farm work to cooking, often helping Henry.  She also worked at the Clear Lake Good Samaritan Care Center for many years. They moved to Estelline in 1990 and to Castlewood Assisted Living in 2019.  The last few months she lived in the Sheldon Iowa Care Center.

She enjoyed being a grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  She kept in touch with family and friends by phone, letters, and personal visits. She enjoyed her gardens, bird feeders, reading books and her Bible, teaching many Bible classes and studies, and trying not to miss Wheel of Fortune.  She encouraged grandchildren to memorize copious Bible verses, often rewarding them with ice cream cones.  She prayed often for her children.

Henrietta was saddened by the death of Henry after 63 years of marriage, her son Sylvan and his wife Denise. Her parents, sister Audrey, brother Fred, brother-in-law Ed (Nell), brother-in-law James TeKrony and his wife Eleanor also preceded her.

Henrietta is survived by her children Joanne (Dan) Elenbaas of Helena, MT, Arlan TeKrony of Volga, SD, and Norman (Candi) TeKrony of Sioux Center, IA; sixteen grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Her family is thankful for her love, testimony and her faithful legacy.  We are thankful for the good care provided by Castlewood Assisted Living Center and the Sanford Care Center in Sheldon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Volga Christian Reformed Church in Volga. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
