Herbert Edward Begalka, son of Gustave and Minnie (Giziewski) Begalka, was born September 3, 1907 in Deuel County, South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at the Hidewood Lutheran Church and grew up and received his education in Fairview District #16 in Hidewood Township. He farmed and raised Hereford Cattle with his brothers Harold and Rolland in Hamlin and Deuel Counties. They retired and moved into Estelline in 1973. Herbert entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in January of 1999 and died there on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 9 days. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Estelline and was also past president of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dempster. Herbert enjoyed traveling and looking at Hereford Cattle and after entering the nursing home he enjoyed singing to the other residents. Grateful for having shared his life are one brother Marvin Begalka and his wife Mae of Estelline; one sister Gladys Falken of Watertown, SD; three sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ervin, Rolland, Leonard and Harold; and two sisters, Helen in infancy and Margaret.
