Hilda (Kinnunen) Sprucelake, daughter of Andrew and Ida (Moilanen) Kinnunen, was born July 23, 1913 on a farm in Hamlin County, South Dakota. She received her education in a rural school in Hamlin County. Hilda worked at Millers Caf in Lake Norden and was united in marriage to Axel Sprucelake on November 8, 1933 in Watertown. They farmed near Dry Lake in Hamlin County before moving to Lake Norden in 1937. They then moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1942 where Axel was employed at a defense plant. They returned to Lake Norden in 1946 and Hilda was employed as a cook with the Lake Norden School when the hot lunch program was started. Axel died on February 15, 1975 and she continued to make Lake Norden her home. She lived at Homestead Assisted Living for six years before entering the Golden Living Center on November 3, 2009. Hilda died there on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the age of 97 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in circle and also worked with a quilting group. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Association where she served as secretary for many years and was also a member of the Senior Citizens.

Over the years Hilda crocheted many afghans as gifts for famly and friends. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing bingo and cards and spending time with family and friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Inez Haan and Judy Bruchhof and her husband Leonard, all of Watertown; one granddaughter Gina Samuelson of Rapid City; one great granddaughter Megan Samuelson; one brother Charles Kinnunen and his wife Darlene of Sioux Falls; one sister Verna Johnson of Minneapolis, MN; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Axel, a son-in-law Melvin Haan, her parents, three sisters and four brothers.
