Strait, son of William and Ida Mae (Norris) Strait, was born December 4, 1918 in Hamlin County, South Dakota. He received his education in Castlewood and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. Following his discharge he returned to the Castlewood area and was united in marriage to Shirley J. Schooley on February 20, 1947 in Watertown, South Dakota. They farmed in Hamlin County until moving into Castlewood in 1972. Hugh continued to work part time for Charles Schooley and Bud Rudebusch for several years. He died on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 22 days. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Castlewood, enjoyed playing bingo and pinochle and eating homemade pie. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter Marlys Thyen of Castlewood; two grandchildren, Brian and his wife Holly of Sewickley, PA and Heather of Castlewood; two brothers, Richard Strait and his wife Ardell of Castlewood, Robert Strait and his wife Pauline of Lake Poinsett, SD; one sister, Lillian Boswell and her husband Ralph of Beresford, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley on June 24, 2005; his parents; and one brother, Maynard; and two sisters, Ida Mae Goeman and Pearl Strait.
