James Eugene Johnson, 80, of Hayti, SD passed away on December 26, 2023. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 3, 2023 at the Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden.

James was born on May 1, 1943, in Volga, SD to Eldon and Dorothy Johnson. He attended school in Hayti, SD. He spent most of his younger years on the farm with his Grandma Appel and Uncle Ralph. His Uncle Ralph was a major influence in his life. He learned how to drive by sitting on Uncle Ralph's lap and steering his 56 Dodge several years before he would receive his license.
Growing up on the farm he was joined by his cousins Mel, Butch and Alvin as they all helped on the farm. There were many seasons of hay thrashings.
Jim's first job was working at Hubert's Standard Station. After working at Burton Chevrolet, he began the job that he would hold for 27 years at the Hamlin County Co-op. He volunteered as a fire fighter in his hometown of Hayti, SD.
He married the love of his life, Suzanne Antijunti on April 15, 1961. They were married for 61 years. They are the parents of Tawnya, Todd, Scott & Suelynn.
Jim loved his 57 Mercury Turnpike Cruser. He was talented at fixing things. In 1976 the family was excited to move into their custom-built new home. It had been designed by Jim and Suzanne and the whole family had watched as it was built counting down the days until they could move in.
Jim enjoyed spending time outside in his yard and with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
James is survived by his son, Todd Johnson, and daughter, Suelynn Straight. Seven Grandchildren and four Great-Children.  Preceded by: Eldon & Dorothy Johnson, Suzanne Johnson, Scott Johnson and Tawnya Crocker.
