Saathoff, son of John and Dora (Heibult) Saathoff, was born January 3, 1927 in Hamlin County, South Dakota. He spent his early years and received his education in Cozy Cottage Rural School in Hamlin County. Jim served in the United States Army from April 14, 1945 to December 18, 1946. He was united in marriage to Frances Hawley on February 4, 1951 in Estelline. After their marriage he was employed at Kleins Motor for several years, Alseike Implement for several years and several other local businesses in Estelline before owning and operating Jims Repair since 1985. He died on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 19 days. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Estelline and the Estelline American Legion. He was a past member of the 40 & 8 Club and the Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Frances of Estelline; one daughter, Carol Reihe and her husband Marvin of Brookings, SD; three sons, Steve Saathoff and his wife Dawn of Sioux Falls, Donald Saathoff and his wife Julie of Estelline, Herbert Saathoff and his wife Sheila of Brookings; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Saathoff of Estelline; four sisters, Matilda West, Anna DeWall, Louise DeWall all of Rapid City, SD and Doris Strachen of Fort Collins, CO. and a host of other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by one son Ray on August 12, 2001; his parents; two brothers, and one step-grandson. Memorial may be directed to Hillcrest Cemetery Association or The Estelline Ambulance Fund.
