Jennie (Van Bemmel) Tillma, daughter of Fred and Wilhelmina (Augustinus) Van Bemmel, was born May 2, 1920 in Brookings County, South Dakota. She received her education in Cozy Cottage rural school in Hamlin County. After her marriage to Robert J. Tillma on April 2, 1942 in Volga, South Dakota they farmed in Hamlin County until moving into Castlewood in 1984. Robert died on August 17, 2001 in Estelline. Jennie continued to make Castlewood her home until entering the Estelline Nursing and Care Center on August 30, 2005. She died there on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 16 days. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood where she was very active in Ladies Aid and the Church Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed quilting and spending time with family and friends. Grateful for having shared her life are her four children and eight grandchildren, Robert Tillma, Jr. and his wife Gloria of Chippewa Falls, WI (Michael & Jen Tillma and Jodie and Luis Cortes), Fred Tillma and his wife Terri of Castlewood (Matthew, Jayson & Ryan Tillma), Doug Tillma of Pipestone, MN; Carol Vanlaningham and her husband Larry of Denver, CO (David, Andrew & Daniel Vanlaningham); two great grandchildren (Isabel & Diego Cortes); one brother, Arthur Van Bemmel and his wife Rose of Spokane, WA; four sisters, Agnes Bleeker of Estelline, Ida Leibsch and her husband Walt of Arlington, SD, Gertrude Folkerts and her husband Cornie of Inwood, IA, Kathryn DeWitt and her husband Bernard of Sioux Center, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends. Jennie was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her parents; six brothers, Vern, William, Ralph, John, Adrian and Cornie; and four sisters, Freda Saathoff, Lena Bakke, Sophie Bruinsma and Margaret Van Bemmel.
