Obituary

Jerald L. Jerry Olson Lake Norden, South Dakota (Formerly of Norfolk, NE) Jerald Leland Jerry Olson, son of Ernest and Eldora (Kangas) Olson, was born May 31, 1938 on the family farm southeast of Hayti, South Dakota. His family moved to California in 1942 where his father was a machinist for Union Oil and worked on navy ships during World War II. They moved back to South Dakota in 1947 and lived on a farm near Hayti. Jerald attended Hayti and Bryant High Schools and graduated from Hayti in 1956. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and was an aviation electrician. He was offered officer training to become a Navy pilot but chose to leave the Navy in 1959 and return to South Dakota. Jerald began work for Lystads Inc. in 1960 and moved to Norfolk, Nebraska. He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Butterfield from Page, Nebraska in 1962 and they had two sons, Todd and Eric. They enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and camping. The family was involved in an accident on December 23, 1964 in which Jackie was killed. Jerald worked in pest control for many years and began Olsons Exterminators in 1968. He ran that business until retiring in 1986 and over the years made many friends and also served as President of the National Pest Control Association. He married Karen Runte from Bassett, Nebraska in 1968 and they had four sons, Carter, Roger Wade, Chad and Colby. He enjoyed attending the childrens athletic events. He lived in Norfolk until moving to the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden in August of 2006 and died there on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the age of 68 years, 9 months and 2 days. Grateful for having shared his life are five sons, Todd Olson and his fianc Shelly of ONeill, NE, Carter Olson and his wife Gretchen, Roger Wade Olson and Colby Olson, all of Norfolk, NE, Chad Olson of Valentine, NE; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother Preston Olson of Bridgewater, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends. Jerald was preceded in death by his wife Jackie, son Eric, parents and two brothers, Roger and Lamar. Memorial visitation will be held from 5PM to 7PM Friday at Geise Funeral Chapel in Lake Norden, followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Burial will be on a later date at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk, NE.
