Gerhold, son of John W. and Nessa (Ross) Gerhold, was born June 24, 1932 at Castlewood, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education there and graduated from Castlewood High School. He was united in marriage to Margaret Anderson on July 3, 1951 in Webster, South Dakota. Following their marriage they lived in Gilbert, Minnesota where he worked at J&L Iron Mines. In 1962 they returned to Castlewood and purchased the farm where they still reside. John died on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at the Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and trustee and was also a member of the choir. John was a founder and board member of the Castlewood Golf Course and was also a member of the Township Board, Castlewood Elevator Board, School Board and helped build the Castlewood Softball Complex. His passions were his family, playing golf, farming and woodworking. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Margaret of Castlewood; their children, Deborah Biord, Daniel Gerhold and his wife Linda, David Gerhold and his wife Kathy, Douglas Gerhold and his wife Sheila, all of Castlewood, Deanne Moes and her husband Tim of Goodwin, SD and Dodi Haug and her husband Daniel of Castlewood; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Loretta Hanz and her husband Bob of Banning, CA and Verna Johnson of Frankfurt, KY; one brother, Ross Gerhold and his wife Bonnie of Lake Norden, SD; one brother-in-law Bud Anderson and his wife JoAnn of Prior Lake, MN; and a host of other relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Lola.
