Joyce M. (Beck) Swift, daughter of Ole L. and Alice E. (Nelson) Beck, was born May 16, 1926 in Estelline. She grew up and received her education in Estelline, graduating from high school in 1944. Joyce attended General Beadle in Madison, South Dakota, where she received her teaching certificate and taught rural schools in the Estelline area for seven years. After her marriage to Richard C. Swift on January 24, 1951 in Estelline, they farmed southwest of Estelline for many years. After retirement they continued to live on the farm and she and Richard enjoyed wintering in Texas for 23 years. Richard died on April 25, 2009 and Joyce remained on the farm until moving into Estelline in the fall of 2010. She entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in February of 2011 and died there on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at the age of 88 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline and was active in Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Jolly Neighbors Extension Club and enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, entertaining in her home, gardening and loved being on the farm. Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Susan Linneman and her husband David of Bruce, SD, Gale Jordan and her husband Michael of Magnolia, TX; five grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Alan, Brett and Tyler; a sister-in-law Wava Janssen and her husband Vance of Sioux Falls; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her parents, a sister Janet Cervik and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Visitation will be from 5PM to 7PM Friday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.
