Obituary

Keith E. Tarrell, 86, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline, SD. Keith's Celebration of Life will be held at the Estelline Legion Building on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 PM. There will be a Private Family Burial Service.

Keith Eugene Tarrell was born July 13, 1937, in Volga, SD, the son of Roy and Ethel (Intermill) Tarrell.  He attended country school and grew up in rural Bruce.  He married Johanna (Jo) Janssen on February 28, 1964, in Dempster.  They began their life together and moved in 1966 to the Tarrell farm that he grew up on.  They were blessed with three girls.

He was a "Keith" of many trades and had a wealth of knowledge.  Keith was in the Army National Guard and held numerous jobs throughout his life.  For Keith, being a farmer was his identity; however, he also served in many other roles such as: working construction, truck driver, grave digging, seed salesman and manure hauling.  He also served on the Preston Township board and was known as the "Weed Police" for the township.

Keith enjoyed going out for Sunday morning breakfast and traveling to thrashing bees with Bob Hutt.  He also enjoyed telling stories of growing up, playing tricks on others, playing games and doing puzzles, enjoying a cup of coffee or a beer with neighbors and spending time with his family and friends. Keith will always be remembered for his humor and quick wit, including many one-liners, which he still had in his last hours.

Keith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jo; daughters, Barb (Six) Luchtenburg of Watertown, Darla Vig of Brookings, Linda (Jon) Greseth of Brookings; grandchildren, Tyler (Shelby) Luchtenburg, Natasha Luchtenburg, Kaleb (Alexandra) Vig, Brianna Vig, Grace Greseth and Lottie Greseth; great grandchildren, Kinley Luchtenburg and Nora Luchtenburg; brother-in-law, Bob Bruinsma and sister-in-law, Elaine Larson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Dennis Tarrell and Roylynn Bruinsma; brother-in-law Donald Pedersen, sister-in-law Darlene (Janssen) Pedersen, and best friend, Bob Hutt.

Keith was so thankful to have shared a lifetime full of memories with family and friends.

His family is thankful for the time they were able to share with him.
