Obituary

Larry Rowe Ching, son of Howard Rowe and Eva A. (Bekke) Ching, was born February 5, 1941 at Castlewood, South Dakota. He grew up on the family farm east of Castlewood and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1959. Larry graduated from SDSU in 1963 with a dairy husbandry major. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Terra Goddard on June 8, 1963 and they were blessed with three children. He farmed along with his father until he took over the farm and continued to be a dairyman until December of 2012. He continued to farm with his son Jeff until retiring due to ill health. Larry passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown surrounded by his family at the age of 73 years. He was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood where he served as an elder, a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and sang in the church choir for 57 years. His beloved baritone voice sang for hundreds of weddings, funerals and other occasions. His greatest joys were spent singing with quartets and duets with his wife. He also sang for many occasions with the "Back Row Boys". His spirit lives on in his sons and grandchildren. Hours of leisure have been spent at sporting and music events for his grandchildren. He loved traveling and reading history, especially history on World War II. He enjoyed watching the crops he planted grow throughout the summer and loved harvest time. His gentle, kind nature will be missed by many. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Terra; and their three sons, Gregory and special friend Brenda of Denver, CO, Jeffery and his wife Tamra of Castlewood, Daniel and his wife Jennifer of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Carver, Canyon, Costner, Myles, Brandon, Alison and Hannah; one sister Carol Tesch and her husband Dr. LeRoy of Watertown, SD; one brother Dr. Gerald Ching of Tampa, FL; many nieces and nephews whom he adored; and a host of other relatives and friends. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Eva and grandson Brennan Ching. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, September 5, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood. Visitation will be from 5PM to 8PM on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood. Burial will be in the Castlewood Cemetery. Geise Funeral Home of Estelline is in charge of arrangements.
