Steffensen, son of Alfred and Clara (Andersen) Steffensen, was born November 11, 1937 on a farm near Lake Norden. He grew up at Lake Norden and attended schools there and graduated from Lake Norden High School in 1955. He attended South Dakota State University and then worked at the lumber yard in Lake Norden. He was united in marriage to Patsy Womble at First Baptist Church in Watertown on June 11, 1961. In 1967 he started work with Austin Mutual Insurance Company and served as the South Dakota Director of Insurance Marketing until his retirement in 2002. Larry served as an alderman for the City of Lake Norden from 1963 until 1969 and then served as mayor from 1969 until the present. He died on Monday, February 23, 2004 at Beverly Healthcare in Lake Norden at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 12 days. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and also as president of the congregation. Larry was very involved in the Lake Norden community and was active on the Lake Region Golf Course Board of Directors and also served as president, a member of the 1752 Club and was past president, Lake Norden Development Corporation, Beverly Healthcare Board of Directors, and the Lake Norden Association. He was a past member of the Lake Norden Fire Department and served on the Ambulance Board and was one of the eight original members that started the ambulance service. He was also a member of the Professional Insurance Agents of South Dakota and enjoyed hunting, golf, playing cards, helping Kasey with his business, playing golf with his daughter Kim and spending time with his family, especially his grandson Gunner. Larrys passion and joy was serving and promoting the city of Lake Norden. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Patsy of Lake Norden; one daughter, Kimberly St. John (David) of Spearfish, SD; one son, Kasey Steffensen of Lake Norden; one grandson, Gunner St. John; his mother-in-law, Helen Womble of Watertown; two sisters-in-law, Sue Drenkow and her children Chris and Corey Denkow of Kirkland, WA and Sharon Steffensen of Lake Norden and her children, Stephanie Carlson of Jasper, MN, Caroline Netzke (Glen) of Lamberton, MN, Jeanne Olney (Meade) of LaVista, NE, Donna Steffensen of Papillion, NE and Jesse Steffensen of Lake Norden; and eight great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Norvid.
