Obituary

LaVerna Bader Schnarr was born April 15, 1919 to Harry Heinrich Otto Schnarr and Mabel Naomi Bader Schnarr, on a farm east of Brandt, South Dakota. She passed away on Monday, September 7, 2015 at the Neighborhoods at Brookview Manor in Brookings, SD at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 23 days. LaVerna attended a rural grade school near Brandt and graduated from high school in Brandt in 1938. After attending Eastern State Normal School in Madison, SD for one year, she taught in rural schools for three years in Deuel County. On June 29, 1942 she married Darrel James Beste in Estelline, SD. They moved to a farm west of Toronto, SD where they raised their family. They were the parents of 13 children: Dennis James, Dwight Terrance, Darrel Wendell, Darla Jean, Douglas Dale, Denice Ann, Dwayne Richard, Debra Joan, Donna Marie, Davey William, Duane Philip, Darwin Jerome and Diane Michele. LaVerna was a very loving, busy wife and mother raising a huge garden, sewing for the family, cooking and baking in large quantities as the family grew. She also enjoyed knitting, fanciwork and quilting. LaVerna also owned and operated the Estelline Dry Cleaners for several years and worked at the 3M Medical Products Plant at Brookings for 10 years until she retired in 1983. She was active in her community, including serving on the Longman School Board and on the Deubrook School Boards for 11 years when the school district was first formed. She also belonged to the Willing Workers Extension Club. She and Darrel moved into a home they built in Estelline in 1978. She lived in Estelline until 2011, when she moved to StoneyBrook Assisted Living in Brookings. She was involved with her church, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish and was also a member of the Red Hat Society during her later years. Surviving LaVerna are 11 sons and daughters: Dennis (Judy) of Estelline, Darrel (Mary Ann Shaw) of Glencoe, MN, Darla (Earl) Smith of Battle Ground, WA, Doug (Cheryl) of Brookings, Denice (Dave) Hellekson of Huntley, MT, Deb (Jim) Kellogg of Watford City, ND, Donna Plovanic (Dave Andrus) Manhattan, MT, Dave (Kathleen) of Brookings, Phil (Anne) of Allyn, WA, Jerry (Lynnette) of Sandy, UT, and Diane (Rob) Leonard of Highlands Ranch, CO. Step grandchildren are Ryan Baker, Sarah (Jacob) Skaggs and Cameron (Kumiko) Ryther. Also surviving are 17 great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Darrel in 1999, her parents, two sons, Terry, age 24 in 1970 and Dickie (Dwayne) as an infant in 1955. Within the family, she will be remembered for her words of advice given through the many sayings she quoted frequently. One of her favorites was "Good, better, best, never let it rest until the good is better and the better best". She tried to live by this in her own life. Her greatest joys in life were spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We all knew of the love she had for us and the pride she had for her family. She leaves a huge void in our lives, and memories of her will remain in our hearts forever. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, September 11, 2015 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline. Visitation will be from 5PM to 7PM Thursday at the church followed by a Scripture Service at 7PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the charity of your choice.
