Niemann, son of John and Alice (Goens) Niemann, was born August 16, 1940 at Clear Lake, South Dakota. He grew up and attended rural school in Deuel County and later served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1962 and then continued in the National Guard until 1966. He was united in marriage to Carol Bolte on September 10, 1966 in Clear Lake. Following their marriage they farmed the Niemann family farm near Clear Lake until retiring in 2002. They continued to make their home on the farm. Lester died on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at Deuel County Memorial Hospital at the age of 65 years, 1 month and 4 days. He was an very active member of Hamlin Reformed Church where he served selflessly throughout the years and willingly served as deacon, elder and taught Adult Sunday School classes. Lester loved to work on equipment in his shop and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He especially enjoyed being a grandfather. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Carol of Clear Lake; five children, Tammy Steinmetz (Craig) of Watertown, SD, Jeff Niemann (Jennifer) of Kranzburg, SD, Chad Niemann (Lois) of Clear Lake, Michelle Crocker (Dave) of La Bolt, SD and Lisa Crocker (Steve) of Castlewood, SD; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Bernard Niemann (Ardith) of Bemis, SD, Henry Niemann (Phyllis) of Clear Lake, Merle Niemann (Deanna) of Estelline, SD and Kenny Niemann (Jackie) of Arlington, SD; two sisters, Lavonna Krause (Orville) of Estelline and Doris Schiefelbein of Clear Lake; and a host of other relatives and friends. Lester was preceded in death by his parents.
