Lloyd Leo Riter was born May 22, 1927, near Willow Lake, SD to Henry and Margaret (Wagner) Riter. He was the 4th of 7 children born to the family. He attended grade school in the Willow Lake area until the family moved to northern Clark County and he finished his high school years at Thorpe School near Bradley, SD. During his high school years, he worked several jobs such as a school bus driver and hauling hay bales. After high school, he joined the Army and served in the South Pacific/Asian theater near the end of the war.

He returned to Lake Norden area where he met his wife, Margaret. They married in 1950 and started their family and had four boys – Eugene, Dean, Randy and Mike. Lloyd began working for Great Northern Railroad shortly before Margaret and he married. He worked for the railroad (which became Burlington Northern and is now Burlington Northern Santa Fe) for 40 years as a depot agent throughout the upper Midwest. During that time, he also operated a gravel pit and ran a farm.

Lloyd was a member of the Lake Norden City Council and was a founding member of the Lake Norden Ambulance service where he served for 13 years. When Lloyd retired from the railroad, he and Margaret spent over 15 years enjoying their travel throughout the U.S. in their RV. After Margaret passed away in 2006, Lloyd eventually moved to Watertown, SD.
