Obituary

Lloyd Sondergaard Dell Rapids, South Dakota Formerly of Estelline, South Dakota Lloyd Sondergaard was born July 2, 1915 in Bryant, South Dakota, the son of Claude and Mary (Cornelius) Sondergaard. He spent his early years and received his education in rural schools in Hamlin county, South Dakota, and was a graduate of Bryant High School. He continued his education at the Vo-Tech in Aberdeen and was then employed at the defense plant in Milwaukee, WI for three years. Lloyd was united in marriage to Ethel Schamens on October 28, 1940 in Rock Rapids, IA. During his younger years, both before and after his marriage, Lloyd was a well known baseball pitcher for many of the town teams in South Dakota. He was a league prospect until his pitching arm gave out; however, his glove was donated to the South Dakota Baseball Hall of Fame in Lake Norden, SD. Lloyd served in the United States Army from 1944 until his discharge in 1946. In 1950, he was employed at L.G. Everest Company in Dell Rapids as a welder until his retirement in 1980. They moved to Estelline, SD in 1986 to be closer to family and to good fishing lakes which was one of Lloyds passions. Lloyd was a member of the United Church of Christ, the American Legion, the Senior Citizens, and the Sportsman Club in Estelline. Besides fishing, he also enjoyed hunting and baseball. Lloyd was an avid reader and often wrote letters to the Argus Leader as well as to friends and relatives. In 2002, Lloyd and Ethel sold their home and moved back to Dell Rapids where their son and grandchildren now resided. Due to health needs, they moved into Orchard Hills, a congregate living center, where Lloyd was able to remain for only one month. After several surgeries, he moved into the Odd Fellows Home in Dell Rapids where he lived until this facility was closed in September of 2003. Lloyd then moved into Terrace Manor Nursing Home, also in Dell Rapids, where he remained until his death on January 25, 2007. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Ethel of Dell Rapids; one daughter, Delores (Albert) Woodbury of Roseburg, OR; two sons, Larry (Doris) of Apache Junction, AZ and Raymon (Bonnie) of Dell Rapids; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Danita Johnson; his brother Raymond; and three sisters, Marie (Pete) Hirschman, Clara (Clayton) Leonard and Anna Sondergaard. Memorial services will be celebrated for friends and family at Terrace Manor Nursing Home in Dell Rapids on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 2:00 PM. Pastors Raymon and Bonnie Sondergaard of Church On The Rock will officiate. Interment of Lloyds remains will be in April at Bryant German Cemetery. Geise Funeral Home of Estelline is in charge of arrangements.
