Lola A. Knuth was born on June 25, 1929, to Roy and Martha (O'Brien) Williams in Kampeska Township, Codington County, SD. She attended Kampeska School until moving to Watertown in 1940. She received the rest of her education at the Watertown Public School. She worked in Watertown at Winkler's Café and Sunnyside Inn before moving to Estelline, SD in 1950. She worked at the old Estelline Hospital until it closed. She was united in marriage to Merle E. Knuth on November 4, 1951. They welcomed two sons, Neil Evans on October 8, 1953, and Brad Alan on December 11, 1956. While raising her family she worked at the new Estelline Hospital. When it closed in 1978, she went to work at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center until she retired in 2008. She and Merle celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2001. They enjoyed a good life together and did a lot of traveling. Merle passed away in 2003. In 2013, Lola moved to Brookings, SD.
Lola was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Estelline, SD, and served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a 48-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Worthy Matron for three years. Lola was a licensed EMT and worked with the American Red Cross Bloodmobiles.
Lola enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crocheting, knitting, crosswords, crafts, and BINGO. With her spunky and playful personality, it was often you would find her making a new friend. One of Lola's greatest talents was being a caretaker to others. With her many years working as a CNA, she found purpose in helping other residents in The Neighborhoods at Brookview, and with her playful personality she often gave advice to the doctors and nurses.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Martha, a brother and sister, her husband, Merle, her two sons, Neil and Brad, and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Audrey and Irwin Linneman.
Left to treasure her memory are her two daughters-in-law, Kathy Knuth of Eagle Bend, MN, and Rochelle Knuth of Bruce, SD, and a special niece, Nancy (Mark) Hausman, Brookings, SD. Lola is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Greg Knuth (Krista), Cory (Kara) Knuth, Blossom (Rob) McCoy, Paul Hartley, Ben Hartley, and Joshua (Ashley) Hartley, and her 15 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many close friends and caretakers of The Neighborhoods at Brookview, where she has resided for almost four years.
