Obituary

On December 27, 2020, Margaret Adele (Helgaas) Lincoln went home to her Lord and Savior. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Geise Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Margaret was born on Thursday, April 26, 1934 in Madison, SD to Andrew Martinus and Muriel Dee (Iddings) Helgaas. She grew up attending Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, SD. Attended school in Madison until her Freshman year of High School which she spent at Prairie Bible Institute High School in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada.  Junior and Senior years of school were spent at Augustana Academy in Canton, SD. During the summer she worked many jobs from waiting tables to Child Evangelism and Byron Bible Camp.  After high school, Margaret went on to attend Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN for two years. While in college, she worked for
a car dealership and as a nursing assistant in Minneapolis and in Huron, SD.  She also attended Dakota State College in addition to taking classes through Mount Marty College. On May 30, 1954, Margaret and Jon M. Lincoln married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, SD Afterwards they headed to Mountain Home, Idaho, where Jon was stationed at the Air Force Base upon his return from the Korean War. While in Idaho, Margaret worked full-time in Boise at an
insurance agency. They moved back to the Midwest after Jon was honorably discharged from the military. The couple ended up in Canby, MN, where Jon worked at the Canby Creamery owned by Margaret's father.  Meanwhile, Margaret worked at the George Insurance Agency.

After a couple of years, they moved back to Madison, SD.  Jon attended General Beadle State Teachers College while Margaret worked at the Madison Clinic and then the Northwest Bank.  Margaret also taught Sunday School at West Central Baptist Church After Jon's graduation from college, they moved to Bryant, SD. While there, Margaret taught shorthand, typing, girls' physical education and coached girls' basketball. She loved hosting teas for the Junior girls and their Mothers, being an active member of the Bryant Ladies American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Club.

In 1967 the family moved to Lake Norden, SD. Margaret started working as school Secretary at Lake Norden School in 1971 and continued working at Hamlin Elementary School until her retirement. While in Lake Norden, Margaret was active in the Live & Learn Extension Club and as a member and officer of the Sons of Norway Lodge. She was very involved in the Lake Norden Baptist church teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Youth Group. She also served in various positions within the Women Mission Organization through the church.
Margaret had many interests and hobbies. She enjoyed reading, quilting and sewing clothes for herself and children. She loved to travel and enjoyed her two trips to Norway with her Father and siblings. Her sense of adventure included trying new recipes and food from foreign countries. One
of her favorite activities was when the grandchildren came and she would spend time with them.

Margaret was a true fighter. She was a 20-year breast cancer survivor; so, five years ago when she had to start kidney dialysis she was up for the challenge. In the end, she passed away from end of stage renal failure.


Margaret is survived by children Brenda (Leland) Fredman, Karin (Mark) Swenson, Jana (Russell) Bacon, Steven (Shelly) Lincoln;  Siblings, Lorraine Helgaas Rittmann, Steffen (Janet) Helgaas; 12 grandchildren, Jonathan (Tessa) Fredman, Jessica (Jon) Busch, Zachary Fredman, Kjersten (Dirk) Oudman, Isaac (Lauren) Bacon, Rachel (Aaron) Shoutz, Sonja Swenson, Krista Lincoln, Seth (Nikole) Bacon, Joel Swenson, Jacob Lincoln, Ethen Lincoln and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Those gone before include her husband, Jon M. Lincoln, grandson Philip Lee Fredman, parents Andrew Helgaas and Muriel Iddings Helgaas Woodley and brother in law John Rittmann
