G. Martin "Mick" Sween was born on October 25, 1925 at Brookings, South Dakota to Gilbert and Signe (Swedlund) Sween. He grew to manhood and received his education in Brookings County. Mick served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He holds three battle stars from the Philippines, Borneo and Okinawa where he served as a gunner aboard the USS Metcalf. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Boom on April 17, 1948 at Hendricks, Minnesota. They farmed in Brookings, Deuel and Hamlin counties until 1964. He was then employed at South Dakota State University for 24 years. He died on Monday, December 23, 2013 at his residence in Estelline at the age of 88 years. Mick was a member and past trustee of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline where he also served as custodian for 28 years. He was a member and past commander and past chaplain of the American Legion Post 184 in Estelline. He was also a life member of the George Dokken V.F.W. Post 2118 in Brookings. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Estelline; one son David Sween and his wife Karen of Brookings; three daughters, Lana Saathoff and her husband Ron of Estelline, Jody and Randy Backus of Tea, SD, Lisa Carson and her husband Dave of Langford, SD; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister Elsie Hovey of Brookings; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mick was preceded in death by one son Douglas, one daughter Bonnie, his parents, three brothers, Carl, Gillard and Dennis, and three sisters, Amanda, Annie and Lillian. His funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline with Pastor Dustin Bartlett officiating. Burial will be in the Dempster Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4PM to 7PM at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.
